If the look of your smile is affecting your self-esteem, you may want to consider cosmetic dentistry. With a variety of procedures to choose from, cosmetic treatment can enhance nearly every aspect of your smile, from tooth color to dental alignment. When you know the truth behind these misconceptions, you can make an informed and confident decision about your care.

Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry Is Only for Celebrities and Influencers.

You don’t need thousands of followers on Instagram to be a candidate for cosmetic dentistry. In fact, the overall popularity of cosmetic treatments has grown significantly in the last few years. And worldwide, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of cosmetic treatments is expected to rise 13.5% by 2030

Myth #2: Cosmetic Dentistry Doesn’t Have Any Health Benefits.

Despite the name, cosmetic dentistry can have functional, as well as aesthetic, benefits. For example, Invisalign® will not only give you a straighter smile. It can also reduce your risk for tooth decay, jaw pain, and TMJ Disorder. In addition to improving your appearance, porcelain crowns can strengthen weakened teeth and prevent further structural damage.

Myth #3: Cosmetic Dentistry Is Expensive.

Cosmetic dentistry costs vary significantly, depending on the type of treatment you choose and the materials from which any restorations are made. It is true that purely elective procedures are not typically covered by insurance. But at our Lombard office, we work hard to provide outstanding care at a reasonable price. Moreover, if your care is also going to fulfill a restorative function (see above), it may be partially or fully covered by insurance.

Myth #4: Cosmetic Treatments Are Invasive.

All of our treatments – cosmetic or otherwise – are minimally invasive. Some treatments, such as teeth whitening, do not require any alteration of your tooth structure. Others, like dental implants, necessitate oral surgery. But this quick outpatient procedure involves little discomfort and a short recovery period.

Myth #5: Treatments Will Weaken My Teeth.

In all likelihood, this myth arose because of porcelain veneers. When placing veneers, Dr. Glud will remove a very thin layer of dental enamel. This means that veneers are a permanent commitment. If one comes off or is damaged, you will need to replace it in order to avoid sensitivity and discoloration. But the process does not weaken your teeth or raise the risk for decay or damage.

Cosmetic dentistry is meant to improve your health and appearance. Dr. Glud would never recommend a treatment that did not enhance your overall wellness.
