Did you know Dr. Julie Glud offers an advanced treatment for unsightly white spots on your teeth? The technology is known as Icon treatment, and the cosmetic procedure is available to any of our patients at Dental Care of Lombard in Lombard, IL. Icon treatment fills and reinforces areas of demineralized enamel without the need for drilling or anesthesia.

Before the advent of Icon technology, white spots could only be addressed using drilling and either resin or porcelain restorations. To schedule your Icon treatment, please contact our office online or call (630) 629-5700.

Causes of White Spots

Lesions are a common cause of white spots on teeth. The white areas have a slightly different mineral content that causes light to reflect in a way that makes the lesions appear white. Cosmetic teeth whitening is often ineffective in treating this dental problem.

Other common causes include:

  • Dental fluorosis (overexposure to fluoride)
  • Enamel hypoplasia (a developmental problem that occurs in childhood)
  • Braces
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Acidic or sugary diets
  • Dental trauma

How Does Icon Treatment Work?

Icon treatments can typically be completed in under an hour. One benefit of this cosmetic treatment is that it requires no local anesthesia.

  • Preparation: The early cavity or white spot on your enamel is pre-treated using a special gel.
  • Drying: A special drying agent is used to dry the pores on the surface of your tooth.
  • Resin infiltration: The special Icon material is used to fill the pores or to penetrate a cavity. The process seals and stabilizes the tooth. A special light is used to harden the resin once it has filled in the white lesions.

Before the advent of Icon technology, the only treatment options available were enamel microabrasion (which required removal of a small amount of enamel) or porcelain veneers. Teeth whitening can mitigate the prominence white lesions, but the cosmetic results are temporary.
