Did you know that a single crown is the most common restorative procedure? If your teeth are severely decayed, damaged, or misshapen, a dental crown may help. A dental crown is a cap placed over the top of the tooth to restore its size, shape, and function.

Getting a dental crown typically takes two visits, but recovery is relatively short. It may feel different when adjusting to the new restoration but your mouth should feel normal within a few days. In this blog, we discuss the recovery process, oral care, and dietary changes that may extend the life of the dental crown.

Recovery

One of the most commonly asked questions for any dental work is, “will it hurt?” To ease discomfort, the dentist applies a local numbing agent before treatment. After the local anesthetic wears off, patients may experience sensitivity to temperature, inflammation, and minor discomfort. It’s normal for these adverse effects may last for a few days— over-the-counter pain relievers can help relieve discomfort. However, discomfort should fade as the bonding agent hardens and the gums recover. Once the crown is in place, patients can use it like a natural tooth.

If your bite feels off or if you feel pain or sore gums for more than a week, reach out to your dentist so that she can examine and make adjustments.

Dietary Adjustments

In general, people can enjoy most of the same foods with a dental crown, but here are some precautions that people with crowns are encouraged to take:

  • Avoid sticky and chewy foods, such as caramel. Sticky foods can dislodge dental restorations.
  • Avoid hard foods, such as ice, because they may cause the crown to break or chip.

Oral Care

To ensure longevity and reduce harmful bacteria, it’s essential to take care of crowns and natural teeth. It’s vital to:

  • Brush teeth twice per day with a non-abrasive toothpaste and soft toothbrush.
  • Remove bacteria and food particles between teeth with floss.
  • Visit the dentist at least twice per year for examinations and cleaning.

Why does my dental crown hurt?

It’s important to note that the dental tissue and nerves underneath the crown are still alive, so damage underneath the restoration is still possible, and you may feel uncomfortable. If your crowned tooth begins to hurt, here are some reasons why:

  • Incorrect fit: When crowns do not fit correctly, it can lead to TMJ disorders, which can cause jaw pain and headaches.
  • Cavities: A new cavity can form on the border of the tooth and crown and can lead to persistent pain.
  • Infection: Bacteria overgrowth underneath the crown can lead to infection, which may cause fever, gum swelling, sensitivity to temperature, and discomfort when chewing.
  • Fractures: A cracked tooth or crown can cause mild pain and sensitivity.
  • Bruxism: Grinding teeth at night can put excessive pressure on the crown.
  • Recessed gums: When gums recede, the tooth root becomes exposed and is more vulnerable to harmful plaque accumulation and gum disease.

Discomfort ranges in severity, but it can be because of a severe underlying condition. Contact your dentist as soon as possible if your crown begins to feel uncomfortable.
