Self care is important. But, with fun self-care options available to us (like face masks and bubble baths), some of the more mundane self-care habits fall by the wayside. Dental hygiene, for example, is a commonly neglected ritual that can have devastating consequences for our oral health. Luckily, preventive care is as simple as creating a healthy and fun dental hygiene routine.
At Dental Care of Lombard, we can help you prioritize optimal dental hygiene with in-depth oral exams and cleanings. If you’re due for a checkup, then schedule your appointment with Dr. Julie Glud today. New and existing patients can call our Lombard, IL, dental office at (630) 629-5700 or they may send our team a message here.
Here, Dr. Glud explores dental hygiene practices that you should be doing every day. Incorporating these practices into your daily hygiene routine can help you keep your smile healthy and strong for life.
Floss at Least Once a Day
When patients begin to let their oral care slide, flossing is usually the first to go. But, flossing is one of the most beneficial dental hygiene practices. So, neglecting it can lead to catastrophic oral health issues, like gum disease and tooth loss.
In fact, a study proved that flossing in addition to twice-daily tooth brushing is remarkably effective at reducing the symptoms of stage 1 gum disease (gingivitis). Indeed, the study found that frequent flossing could even reverse gingivitis.
But, flossing alone isn’t enough–patients must have satisfactory flossing techniques, too. For example, simply running floss through the teeth doesn’t remove much built-up plaque. However, mindfully scraping the sides of teeth and getting below the gumline does. So, floss at least once a day, and be sure to use good techniques!
If technique is an issue for you with conventional string floss, then try using more user-friendly options, such as:
- Single-use or reusable interdental flossers
- Interdental picks
- Water picks
Brush at Least Twice a Day
For many, tooth brushing is a challenge. But, the American Dental Association states that we should be brushing our teeth for at least two minutes twice a day, every day.
Brushing removes residual food debris, bacteria, and tartar from the teeth. These things can cause cavities and gum disease, so removing them via brushing ensures a healthier, stronger smile.
But, twice-daily brushing for two minutes at a time isn’t always enough. Patients should consider other important factors while brushing their teeth, such as:
- Which non-abrasive toothpastes to use
- Choosing an age-appropriate, soft-bristled toothbrush
- Using remineralizing agents, like fluoride or nano-hydroxyapatite
Dr. Glud recommends using non-whitening toothpastes, as whitening toothpastes can be too hard on tooth enamel. Additionally, she recommends using toothpastes that help rebuild weak enamel (like with fluoride or other remineralizers) to help strengthen teeth.
And, don’t forget to swap out your toothbrush every three to four months! Otherwise, harmful oral bacteria may build up on the toothbrush and get reintroduced into the mouth at every brushing. Furthermore, worn toothbrush bristles are less effective at sweeping away tartar, which can lead to poor dental hygiene.
Most importantly–schedule dental hygiene visits with our Lombard dentist!
The best way to facilitate proper dental hygiene is with regular dental exams and cleanings. So, don’t wait–give yourself the healthy mouth you deserve and schedule a dental cleaning at Dental Care of Lombard today.
