Modern dentistry has made having missing teeh a thing of the past. Aside from being an aesthetic issue, missing teeth can lead to several other issues, such as:

  • Decay
  • Gum disease
  • More tooth loss
  • Jawbone deterioration
  • Facial atrophy

Thankfully, avoiding these problems is simple when you visit with an experienced and compassionate dentist. Dental implants and dental bridges are two of the most common solutions for missing teeth. Continue reading to learn about the pros and cons of each option.

Dental Implant

Dental implants are small rods that look like screws that are inserted through the gums, into the jaw. Once healed, an abutment and dental crown are attached to the implant. This is the only tooth-replacement option that replaces the entire tooth from the crown to the root. Dental bridges and dentures can also be attached to a dental implant.

An orthopedic surgeon named Branemark was the first to place a titanium dental implant in 1965. Since then, dental technology has significantly improved. So much so that dental implants are the most successful tooth-replacement option available today.

Benefits of a dental implant

The high success rate of dental implant surgery is just one reason to choose dental implants. Additionally, patients prefer dental implants because they reduce the risk of jawbone deterioration that leads to facial atrophy and further tooth loss. Dental implants look and feel just like a natural tooth.

Downsides to dental implants

There are few consequences to choosing dental implants. However, many patients reject implants because they require surgery and up to 18 months of time. In addition, dental implants are one of the most expensive restorative options.

Dental Bridge

Dental restorations aren’t new. Ancient civilizations carved teeth from bamboo and used gold and silver wires to thread artificial teeth together. Though these solutions probably didn’t provide more function, they did improve their appearance.

Today, dental bridges are made from medical-grade ceramic and acrylic resin that look much like natural teeth.

Benefits of a dental bridge

When compared to dentures, dental bridges are much more comfortable and stable. Rather than being anchored by the gums, a dental bridge is connected to the patient’s natural, healthy teeth by dental crowns. Patients should never experience movement or rubbing that irritates the gum tissue.

As for dental implants, a dental bridge costs less and the process is much quicker. Rather than taking over a year to complete, dentists can have a dental bridge created and placed in just two dental appointments!

Downside to dental bridges

One of the greatest disadvantages to a dental bridge is that it doesn’t support jawbone regeneration. This means your mouth is still susceptible to bone loss that leads to more tooth loss and facial atrophy. Dental bridges aren’t expected to last as long as dental implants (which last forever) because they can cause damage to the healthy abutment teeth.
