Preventive Care for Children

Although they eventually fall out, children’s teeth are just as important as adult teeth. Because of this, we work hard to prevent any issues that might lead to cavities or premature tooth loss.

Our most effective preventive treatments for children include:

Dental cleanings and exams

Six-month dental cleanings are an essential part of good oral hygiene for children and adults. Kids are especially prone to missing parts of their mouth while brushing and flossing which makes attending these appointments even more important!

During your child’s appointment, Dr. Glud will evaluate his or her teeth and gums for signs of decay or gum disease. When your child attends these appointments regularly, Dr. Glud has the opportunity to track his dental development to see if he will need braces or other extensive treatments.

Then, one of our friendly hygienists will gently remove plaque and tartar from the gum line and between the teeth.

Fluoride Treatments

Many children’s dentists recommend fluoride treatments two to four times a year. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that is placed in toothpaste and tap water to help prevent cavities. Fluoride treatments provide extra protection!

This can be applied during your child’s regular dental cleaning appointment, but first, talk to your child’s dentist about how much fluoride is appropriate. An over-exposure to fluoride can cause dental fluorosis—permanent white streaks on the teeth.

Dental Sealants

Tooth sealants can prevent 80 percent of cavities for two years and 50 percent for two years after that. These are translucent seals that are painted on top of the back molars that shield teeth from disease-causing bacteria, tartar, and plaque.
