Gum disease and dental implants sometimes go hand in hand. Gum disease often leads to tooth loss and implants are an easy way to replace teeth. A perfect match, right?

The reality is a bit more complex. Gum disease leads to diminished gum tissue and jaw bone density. In order to get implants, patients need to have healthy gums

What’s the solution? Advanced gum disease isn’t curable, but it is manageable. Dentists can treat gum disease, but it may not be enough to make patients good candidates for implants.

Who is likely to be denied dental implants?

If a dentist or oral surgeon declines to install dental implants, they are probably concerned about the potential for rejection or infection. More than 90% of dental implants succeed, but there are high-risk cases where implants are not a good idea.

  • Smokers

While smoking does not automatically disqualify patients who want dental implants, there are some serious risks associated with smoking. First, smoking erodes the gum line and weakens the jaw bone. Surgeons need a healthy jaw bone and gum line to support the implants.

Next, smoking can interfere with the implant’s ability to bond with the bone that surrounds it. If dental implants do not heal correctly, the risk of rejection is much higher. In general, smokers should refrain from smoking for eight weeks after surgery.

  • People with diabetes or cancer

Diabetics may get implants, but only if their diabetes is currently under control. When blood sugar is out of control, the healing process takes much longer. People with cancer may also qualify for dental implants, but they need to talk to their doctors first.

One reason that dental implants fail is an infection at the implant site. If patients have pre-existing diseases and compromised immune systems, that infection could circulate through the body and cause chaos.

Look for dentists who specialize in dental implants. They will work with PCPs to determine eligibility.

  • Patients with advanced gum disease

As we mentioned earlier, advanced gum disease is incurable. It is treated with deep cleanings and, if necessary, antibiotics. Some patients report that gargling with salt water helps to cleanse the pockets between the gums and teeth.

A healthy diet may be able to help improve gum disease as well. High-fiber foods, dairy products, and green tea all make the list of healthy foods that are great for the gums and teeth.

Regular brushing, flossing, and twice-yearly dental checkups should always be part of the game plan. Some dentists recommend using water picks instead of flossing, but that’s up to the individual.

If patients are considering getting dental implants, they should schedule a consultation about six months before their planned surgery date. This will give the dentist a chance to diagnose gum disease, if it is there, and work with the patient to improve gum and jaw strength.
