What are composite fillings?

Composite fillings are a versatile dental material that Dr. Julie Glud can use as a restorative or cosmetic treatment to:

  • Mend cavities
  • Repair dental damage, like chips and cracks
  • Cover stubborn discoloration
  • Protect worn teeth
  • Address tooth sensitivity

The material dental professionals use to create composite fillings is made by mixing plastic and glass together. But, don’t let that fool you–these advanced fillings are remarkably durable, which is why they frequently last for 10 years or longer.

What do composite dental fillings look like?

Not only are composite fillings durable and long-lasting, but they also look strikingly similar to the color and luminescence of natural teeth

In the past, dentists used metal to fill in cavities and repair dental damage. But, those restorations were extremely noticeable, making it a source of embarrassment for some patients. Today, however, tooth-colored composite fillings allow patients to seamlessly repair and protect their smiles.

What can fillings treat besides cavities?

The most common use for composite dental fillings is to restore the natural structure and function of teeth following cavity removal. But, there are several ways that Dr. Glud can use composite resin, such as:

  • Fixing minor dental damage: Rather than using a dental crown, Dr. Glud can use teeth fillings to repair minor dental damage, like chips, cracks, and fractures.
  • Covering internal dental discoloration: Certain medications, some health conditions, and trauma can discolor the inside of our teeth. Unfortunately, teeth whitening treatments cannot lift these internal stains. Tooth-colored fillings, however, can easily cover whitening-resistant stains.
  • Soothing tooth sensitivity: Over time, the protective enamel on our teeth grows thinner. Significant enamel erosion can result in tooth sensitivity. Alternatively, gum recession can expose sensitive tooth roots, resulting in painfully sensitive teeth. Covering sensitive, weak, or exposed areas on a tooth with composite resin is an ideal way to get lasting relief from tooth sensitivity.

How much do dental fillings cost?

Without insurance, a composite filling might cost patients between $200 and $600. However, many insurance companies partially or completely cover dental fillings for restorative procedures, like cavity treatment.
