How to Achieve A Better Smile in 2021

Did your oral hygiene take the back burner in 2020? It was a crazy and hard year for so many of us. Hopefully, 2021 has much better in store! Some simple self-care practices can certainly help start the year off on the right foot!

If you’re ready to achieve a healthy, radiant smile, here are five tips from our Lombard, IL dentist:

1. Use the proper tools

Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day isn’t nearly as effective if you aren’t using the right tools. Most dentists recommend using a soft-bristled manual or electric toothbrush. Electric toothbrushes are especially beneficial because they do all of the work for you!

Be sure to also use a fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash. Talk to your dentist about the best toothpaste or mouthwash for your oral health needs.

Flossing must be completed properly to be effective. Thankfully, the process is simple! Take about six inches of floss, wrap most of it around your right pointer finger, then a small part of it around your left pointer finger. Use what’s between the fingers to clean between the teeth. Run the floss down one side of a tooth, then up the other side. Release the floss from the right finger and twirl it around the left one. Continue this process between all of the teeth.

2. Eat right

It’s no secret that eating too much sugar and too many carbs create an environment where cavities and gum disease thrive. So, while we don’t expect you to completely give these up, limiting sugar and carbs will definitely benefit your oral AND overall health.

Trade some of your favorite treats for more whole foods or dairy foods that support healthy teeth and gums.

3. Drink more water

Rather than drinking coffee, tea, and soda throughout the day, drink water instead! Water strengthens teeth, cleans the mouth, and encourages saliva production. Saliva is essential because it balances the pH in the mouth to protect teeth against decay.

4. Consider cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dental solutions could be the key to achieving the beautiful smile of your dreams. Talk to an experienced dentist about professional teeth whitening, veneers, and other ways to improve the aesthetics of your teeth.

Cosmetic dental techniques like teeth whitening are relatively affordable and extremely effective.

5. Visit the dentist at least twice a year

Most dentists recommend biannual visits, but for some patients, more frequent visits are necessary. During these appointments, x-rays are taken, and the dentist checks for signs of oral cancer, decay, and teeth grinding. These problems are addressed as necessary.

The dental hygienist gently and thoroughly cleans the teeth using professional dental tools and ingredients. He or she will also check for signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and teeth grinding. In some cases, gum disease can be treated with a regular dental cleaning.
