Primarily, the focus of periodontics is to prevent periodontal disease. Because nearly half of adults over the age of 30 suffer from some form of periodontal (gum) disease, it’s essential to keep a watchful eye on the gums and other supporting structures.

At Dental Care of Lombard, Dr. Julie Glud diagnoses and treats periodontal disease via proactive measures and proven treatments. Check on your gum health by scheduling an appointment today.

What is periodontics?

The term “periodontics” is a combination of two Greek words:

  • “Peri,” which means “around”
  • “Odons,” meaning “tooth.”

Therefore, periodontics is a branch of dentistry that handles the supporting structures around the teeth, including the following:

  • Gums form a tight seal around teeth and provide a barrier against bacteria.
  • Jawbones (alveolar bones) contain teeth and help people chew, bite, and handle food.
  • Periodontal ligaments are fibrous joints that connect the tooth to the dental socket.
  • The cementum connects the tooth to the jaw by anchoring it to the periodontal ligament.

Why is it important to keep your gums healthy?

Sometimes, people overlook the importance of gums. However, healthy gums may be the secret to keeping your:

  • Teeth pearly white, hygienic, and intact
  • Your body healthy

Periodontics and Oral Health

The gums act as a sealed, protective layer for your teeth, tooth roots, and jawbone that locks them into place. Unfortunately, bacteria and food debris can sneak into deeper gum pockets without secure gums.

Once there, the unwanted bacteria and debris cause the teeth to appear yellow and cause the teeth’s entire structure to decompose. Consequently, the teeth become loose, ultimately detaching from the jawbone and causing irreversible damage

Periodontics and Systemic Health

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease, which is complex and not completely understood yet. However, untreated periodontal disease can cause the immune system to run in hyperdrive and may cause the body to become defensive over the tiniest things.

Also, neglected gum disease paves the way for overgrown bacteria to enter the bloodstream. So, periodontal disease may contribute to the progression of:

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Respiratory disease
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease

What are common signs of unhealthy gums?

Gum disease starts as mild gingivitis but progresses and worsens into periodontitis. Some warning signs of gum disease include:

  • Bleeding gums (especially after brushing)
  • Red, puffy, or tender gum tissue
  • Shifting or loose teeth
  • Ulcers (oral sores)

Although gingivitis can be reversed with intervention from a dentist, often, it goes unnoticed until it’s too late. Therefore, it’s important to visit the dentist at least every six months so that you can tackle gum disease before permanent damage occurs.

What can you do to keep your gums healthy?

The most vital action a person can take to prevent periodontal disease development is practicing excellent, consistent oral hygiene. This includes:

  • Scheduling dental checkups at least every six months
  • Participating in scaling and root planing if gum pockets develop
  • Brushing and flossing teeth properly
  • Using an antibacterial, ADA mouthwash
  • Avoiding tobacco use
  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Limiting your sugar intake
