One of the best parts of being a parent is watching your child reach milestones in their life. From their first steps to their first day of school, each moment is new and exciting. One event that probably doesn’t come to mind when you think of “exciting” milestones is your child’s first dental visit. However, when you meet with your Lombard dentist, Dr. Julie Glud, she will ensure your child’s experience is as pleasant as possible.
Dental Care of Lombard is a family-focused practice, dedicated to providing excellent service to patients of all ages. With three little ones of her own, Dr. Glud understands how important a positive dental experience is for children. If you’re ready to schedule an appointment, call us today at 630-629-5700.
Here are three things you can do to prepare your child for the dentist:
Step 1: Find the Right Dentist
A google search, asking your friends and family, or asking your pediatrician are all good places to start. To narrow down your options, decide on a location and office hours that work best for your family’s schedule. Once you have chosen two or three potential dentists, review their website for payment options, dental services, FAQs, and testimonials help you make the best decision. You can also schedule an interview.
We suggest finding a family dentist who can serve your child through all stages of life. This way, you never have to prepare him or her for a first visit ever again. A family dentist will be able to treat the rest of your family as well. Having your dental needs met at the same time and place as your child just makes life easier.
Step 2: Choose the Right Time
The American Dental Association recommends taking your child to the dentist as soon as he or she has their first tooth—around six months old. It’s obviously not necessary to have a long talk with your six-month-old about the dentist, but you will want to choose an appointment time that works with his or her eating and sleeping schedule. This will make their experience better.
For older children, you should prepare them for their dentist’s visit beforehand. Here are some things you can do to ease their nerves:
- Read them a book about the dentist
- Watch a tv show about going to the dentist
- Share with them why you like visiting the dentist
- Answer any questions they have
If you do these things, your child will feel much more comfortable about their dentist’s appointment.
Step 3: Make It Fun
During this visit, your dentist will educate you on proper gum and tooth care for your child. Although a younger child probably won’t remember this visit, you can still make it fun by bringing their favorite toy for them to play with.
For an older child, think about ways to help them associate the dentist with fun experiences. Is there a movie they want to see or an ice cream place they are always begging you to take them to? Plan it for afterwards! If you’re worried about how your child might feel once he or she arrives at the office, buy a special stuffed animal or doll to keep them comforted.
