What causes white spots on teeth?

White spots are often a very early sign of dental decay. When bacteria or plaque accumulate on teeth, they start to erode the dental enamel, a process known as demineralization. When the enamel is depleted, teeth become more porous. In turn, this changes the way that light refracts from teeth, leading to the development of white spots. Unchecked, the demineralization process will eventually lead to cavities.

There are a number of factors that can cause demineralization, including:

  • A buildup of plaque during orthodontic treatment
  • A diet high in sugar or other starches
  • A diet high in acid
  • Insufficient dental hygiene

Less commonly, white spots may appear because of an overexposure to fluoride during childhood. Other patients may have a birth defect known as enamel hypoplasia, which causes thinner-than-normal tooth enamel. In some cases, dental trauma can also damage enamel.

How does Icon work?

Before performing Icon teeth treatment, Dr. Glud will clean your teeth. Then she will isolate the teeth to be treated, keeping them dry and protecting the surrounding soft tissues. Next she will lightly etch your teeth with a hydrochloric acid gel. This material will remove blemishes on the surface, as well as damaged enamel. After drying your teeth, she will apply a resin called Icon-Infiltrant, which she will cure with a special light. The resin will actually seal off the pores of the teeth. In turn, this will harden the enamel and prevent further demineralization. The newly strengthened enamel will also refract light differently. This will result in a dramatic reduction or even a virtual disappearance of white spots.
