Tooth and gum pain is never normal, though it is common. In some cases, emergency dental care is necessary while, in other cases, home remedies will do the trick. Those experiencing dental pain in one tooth, pain between teeth, or gum pain should monitor their symptoms closely. Pain that coincides with swelling, irritation, or fever needs to be addressed immediately.

Pain Between Teeth Causes, Remedies, and Treatments

Pain between teeth may be a dull, persistent ache, or a sharp pain that occurs after eating, drinking, brushing, or flossing. Is it something to be concerned about? Should you seek emergency dental care? Are there home remedies you can try?

Lodged Food Particles

Steak, corn on the cob, ribs, and popcorn are some of the most common foods that get lodged between teeth. While most of the particles can be removed with a toothpick, it doesn’t always remove the entire thing. This can lead to pain and discomfort, especially if it sits there for more than a day.

To ensure lodged food particles aren’t the issue, be sure to use traditional floss or a floss pick to clean between the teeth. Sometimes, vigorously swishing saltwater around the mouth will do the trick!

In cases where the food has become stuck in the gum tissue, patients may experience swollen, irritated gums. If the particle cannot be removed, a trip to the dentist is necessary to reduce the risk of infection.

Gum Disease

Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease affects nearly half of all American adults, so it’s no surprise that it’s on this list. Inflammation and irritation are two of the first symptoms of gum disease. As the gums swell, it may result in radiating pain between teeth.

For immediate relief at home, patients can try a saltwater rinse to reduce inflammation and clean the area.

In the earliest stage of gum disease, called gingivitis, increasing oral hygiene can reverse the symptoms. However, the best treatment for gum disease happens in a professional setting. During a regular dental cleaning and exam appointment, dentists can determine how far the disease has developed and treat it accordingly. Typically, dentists recommend a scaling and root planing to remove plaque and tartar from the gum line and eradicating the disease.

Tooth or Gum Abscess

A tooth abscess can be caused by dental decay, a crack in the tooth, or gum disease. These abscesses develop in the pulp, or inside of the tooth, and can spread to the bone if left untreated. Symptoms of a tooth abscess include:

  • Severe and persistent toothache
  • Radiating pain to the jaw, neck, or ear
  • Dental sensitivity
  • Fever
  • Tender lymph nodes

A gum abscess can actually be caused by lodged food particles. Gum abscesses appear as red and swollen lesions and will eventually damage the teeth and bones. Patients with a gum abscess usually experience the same symptoms as with a tooth abscess.

Abscesses are extremely dangerous. Patients who believe they have a dental or gum abscess should contact their dentist as soon as possible.
